What are betting splits?
Betting splits show how the betting public is divided on a game in two ways: the percentage of bets (how many tickets are on each side) and the percentage of money, the handle (how many dollars are on each side). Comparing the two is the whole point. When a side has far more money than tickets, a small number of large, sharp wagers are driving it - not the crowd.
Public betting percentages: bets % vs money %
Bets % counts tickets, so it reflects what the public is doing. Money % counts dollars, so it reflects what the biggest bettors are doing. A side with 40% of bets but 65% of money is backed by fewer, larger wagers - the footprint of sharp money. When bets and money are lopsided the same way, that is usually the public piling on a favorite or an over.
What is sharp action and sharp money?
Sharp action is when the money percentage on a side runs well ahead of the bet percentage, meaning larger and more disciplined bettors are on it. It often shows as reverse line movement, where the line moves toward the side getting fewer tickets because the dollars are heavier there. Every page on this site flags it automatically with the knife icon.
How to read betting splits
- Look at the gap between bets % and money %. A big money-over-bets gap on one side is the key signal.
- Check the best price and whether the line moved. Money on a side that also moved the line is the strongest read.
- Use the moneyline, spread and total views - the same game can tell a different story in each market.
- Pair the read with the best number across books. Splits tell you where the money is; you still need the best price to profit.

Frequently asked questions
What are betting splits?
Betting splits show how the public is divided on a game in two ways: the percentage of bets (tickets) and the percentage of money (handle) on each side. The gap between them reveals whether the crowd or the sharps are driving a line.
What is public betting?
Public betting is the share of tickets on each side of a game. Comparing it to the share of money shows whether a side is backed by many small bets (the public) or fewer large ones (sharp money).
What are public betting percentages?
The percentage of bets and the percentage of money on each side, shown per market. When money percentage runs well ahead of bet percentage, that side is carrying sharp action.
How do you know who the public is betting on?
The bets % column is the public — it counts tickets. The side with the most tickets is where the public is. When the money % on the other side is higher, the sharps disagree with the public.
What is sharp money?
Sharp money is wagering from larger, more disciplined bettors. It shows up as a money percentage well above the bet percentage on a side, and it often moves the line toward that side.
How often do betting splits update?
They refresh live from the market as bets come in and lines move, throughout the day and during games.
